Professor in Diabetic Medicine @ Department of Medicine, University of Peradeniya
Professor Arjuna Medagama is a Professor in Diabetic Medicine at the Department of Medicine, University of Peradeniya. He is a past pupil of Trinity College Kandy and an alumnus of the Peradeniya Medical school. He obtained his MBBS in 1998 with second class honors securing rank number one. During his undergraduate career he received the Dr. C.E.S. Weeratunge Gold Medal for the second MBBS examination, Chalmers Gold Medal for Anatomy, Dr. C.B. Dharmasena Gold Medal for Anatomy and Dr. H.J. Hazari Gold Medal for the 3rd MBBS. He also received the University scholarship for the second MBBS examination, Arthur Fernando Memorial prize, P.B. Panabokke and Irene Maralande Panabokke Memorial Scholarship for the 3rd MBBS, the University Scholarship for the Final MBBS and Dr. A.C. Fernando Memorial prize in Surgery. He passed his 2nd and 3rd MBBS examination with First Class honours. He obtained his MD (Medicine) in 2005 passed MRCP (UK) in 2006 while training in the UK from 2006 to 2007. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (London) and the Ceylon College of Physicians.
He is the present Head of the Department of Medicine at Peradeniya, and has held many offices in the past including that of secretary to the Board of study in Medicine, PGIM, university of Colombo. Professor Medagama is a member of many committees at university and National level.
His research interests include diabetes epidemiology, cardiovascular disease in diabetes, nutrition and exercise in diabetes and complementary and alternative medicine use in diabetes and obesity. He has presented many abstracts and authored over 25 research papers in peer reviewed international journals. He has published 2 books on Hypertension and Diabetes for medical undergraduates. He has been awarded the Presidential awards for 2014 & 2015 for research publications.
